A Minimum of 98 Palestinians Have Died in Custody Beginning in October 2023, Israeli Data Indicates
According to figures provided by Israel, no fewer than 98 detainees from Palestine have perished while detained starting from October 2023. A rights monitoring body based in Israel has indicated that the actual number is almost certainly substantially larger, as a result of many of missing detainees in Gaza.
Study Results
A new investigation recorded casualties caused by brutality, lack of healthcare, and malnutrition. Analysts used transparency petitions, medical examiner documents, and interviews with legal representatives, human rights defenders, family members, and witnesses.

Even with the aggregate figure of deaths charted being significantly higher than earlier projections, it likely does not reflect the complete extent of Palestinian casualties, per the leader of the prisoner monitoring division.
“While we are offering documentation for a higher number of deaths than once estimated, this is not a full picture,” he explained. “We are confident that there are even now people who died in custody that we are unaware of.”
Non-Combatant Fatalities
Restricted Israeli data suggests that the largest portion of incarcerated Palestinians from Gaza who died in prison were non-combatants, per a simultaneous inquiry.
In May of 2024, a military intelligence database monitoring all militants in Gaza, a list of more than 47,000 listed people, listed only 21 casualties in detention. At that time, 65 Palestinians from Gaza had perished in jail.
Custodial Environment
Physical violence, mistreatment, and additional maltreatment of detainees from Palestine is now standard practice across Israel’s prison network over 24 months of conflict. Senior officials have publicly acknowledged starvation rations and an below-ground detention center confining Palestinian individuals who are denied sunlight.
Existing and previous prisoners and whistleblowers from the defense forces have collectively claimed systemic violations of international law.
Institutionalized Cruelty
The organized mistreatment was accompanied by a troubling surge in deaths documented across a minimum of 12 detention centers in Israel. In the decade prior to the conflict, there were on average a couple deaths a year.
“This isn’t only a single occurrence here and there. It is widespread and it is likely to persist,” a spokesperson stated, in part since there is a climate of almost complete immunity for harming and abusing Palestinians.
Only a single instance of assaulting prisoners has reached litigation, with the military personnel sentenced to half a year. An effort to charge other suspects over a vicious assault involving assault led to public rallies and the apprehension of Israel’s top military lawyer, with the suspects now requesting that charges against them be dismissed.
No Legal Action
“In spite of this mass number of fatalities, during 24 months not a single person has been detained,” the spokesperson noted. “There are no indictments over any fatality.
“While these policies continue to be enforced, all Palestinian detainees in confinement faces risk, also the physically well individuals, also the young ones who have no underlying conditions.”
Prominent Examples
Certain fatalities in confinement have been publicly known, including a 50-year-old healthcare leader who perished in prison after four months in confinement.
An inmate detained alongside the individual testified that he was led to the courtyard by prison staff immediately preceding his death, obviously hurt and unclothed from the lower body. His corpse remains unreleased to Gaza.
Further inmates who lost their lives in confinement by Israeli authorities stay unnamed. The prison service and armed services supplied analysts with the total of deaths in confinement, and basic further data for example the location where they lost their lives, but excluding the inmates’ personal details.
Identification Challenges
