A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's key government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.
The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in national works. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
